the thirty fourth letter of the alphabet and the seventh of the vowels;
seven thousand;
seven thousandth;
It is used both as a vowel & as a consonant. As a vowel for example in the words իւրաքանչիւր, ուխտ, etc., and as a consonant in the words հաւատ, սեաւ, հիւանդ, etc.;
It is only used as a medial final letter, sometimes serves for the consonant վ, for instance : օթեւան — օթեվան, երիւար — երիվար, վաւաշ — վավաշ, etc, or for the diphthong u, as, հւսւտ instead of հիւսիւս;
There is no proper word beginning with this letter, but on account of its affinity with the letter հ, it is sometimes substituted for it;
Joined with ի (իւ), it is generally pronounced like the French u as : դիւր, հիւր, դիւթ, & preceding the ո (ու) is pronounced like the English ou. Preceded also by ա (աւ), was anciently pronounced o as : աւրհնեմ — օրհնեմ, աւր — օր;
It is sometimes used instead of the suffixes ի & յ as : ւայդմանէ — յայդմանէ, ւիւրաքանչիւր — յիւրաքանչիւր;
In poetry, it is sometimes used instead of the conjunction եւ or ու.
