• = Յն. βάρβαρος «ո՛չ-յոյն, այլազգ, օտար-ազգի, վայրենի», այս անունով էին որակում Յոյները բոլոր այն ազգերին, որոնք յունարէն չէին խօսում, որոնց լեզուն իրենց անհասկա-նալի էր. հմմտ. Անաքարսիսի խօսքը. «Սկիւ-թացիք բարբարոս են առ Աթենացիս և Աթե-նացիք՝ բարբարոս առ Սկիւթացիս»։ Նոյնպէս Ոմեռեոս ռանաստեղծր՝ աքսորուած օտար երկիր, գրում է. «Բարբարոս եմ աստ, զի ոչ ոք իմանայ զիս»։ Բառը յետոյ ստացաւ «վայրենի» նշանակութիւնը և փոխառու-թեամբ տարածուեց շատ ուրիշ լեզուների մէջ. ինչ. լտ. barbarus, ֆրանս. barbare, թրք. barbarləq «բռնակալութիւն», վրաց. ბარბაროსი բարբարոսի ևն։ Ըստ ծագման՝ յոյն բառը կցւում է սանս. barbaras «կա-կազ», սլով. brbrati, սերր. brboljiti «բռբը-ռալ», լիթ. birbti «բզզալ» ևն բառերին՝ իբրև բնաձայն (Boisacq 114)։ Յն. βάρβαρος բառը Weidner, Glotte IV 303 (տե՛ս Boi-sacq 1100) փոխառեալ է համարում բաբել, barbaru «օտարական» բառից։ Յոյն բառի «այլալեզու՝ անհասկանալի խօսուածք. աղ-ճատաբանութիւն» առումից է ձևացած հալերէնում էլ բարբարոս «բարբանջանք» ԱԲ։-Հիւբշ. 343։
• Schröder, Thesaur. 56, 57 հայերէն ռա-ռի արմատը դնում է բառ, բարբառ. հա-յերէնից է փոխառեալ յունարէնը, որից էլ անցել է միւս լեզուներին։ Ուղիղ մեկ-նեց նախ Աւետիքեան, Մեկն. թղթ. Պօ-ղոսի Ա. 957(?) և յետոյ ՆՀԲ։

• = Պրս. և արաբ. [arabic word] barbut, որ և barbat (ըստ Կամուս, թրք. թրգմ. Բ. 455) «մեծափոր նուագարան ինչ. լավութա, luth». ոմանք այս բառը ստուգաբանում են պրս. bar-i-bat «սա-գի կուրծք»։ Ըստ այսմ բառը բնիկ պարսկե-րէ՞ն է, որից փոխառեալ են նաև յն. βάρβιτος, βάρβιτον (Զ դար Ն. Ք.), լտ. barbitus, վրաց. ბარბითი բարբիթի, ֆրանս. berbith «արաբ-ներին յատուկ մի տեսակ չորեքաղի նուառա-բան»։ Հայերէնը չի կարող լինել յունարէնից i-ի պատճառաւ, մանաւանդ որ Ուռհայեցու ժամանակ զուր է փնտռել յունական ազդե-ռութիւն։ Փոխառեալ է նոր պարսկերէնից կամ արաբերէնից, ինչպէս հաստատում է ռւ ձայնաւորը։
• Առաջին անգամ ՀՀԲ դրաւ յունարէնից։ Ուղիղ մեկնեցին ՆՀԲ և ՋԲ՝ դնելով պարսկերէնից։ Lag. Arm. Stud. § 365 դնում է արաբ. և պրս. ձևերը։ Հիւբշ. 343 դնում է յունարէնից։

• Աղբալեան ՀԱ 1927, 406 հանում է պրս. barg «տերև» բառի գործիականից +աճ։ (Սխալ, որովհետև barg բառի հին ձևն է պհլ. valg (նաև varg), զնդ. varəka «տերև»)։
