• = Յն. ἐxϰλησία «հաւաքոյթ ժոզովուրդի, զինւորների, յետնաբար՝ հաւատացեալների. 2. հաւաքատեղի, յետնաբար՝ եկեղեցի», εϰϰλησιάζω «ժողովի հրաւիրել, ժողով կազ-մել, խորհրդակցութեան ներկայ լինել». έϰϰιησιαστιϰός «եկեղեցական, կրօնաւոր». ծառում է ϰαλέω «կոչել», ἐx-ϰαλέω «դուրս կանչել» բայից. և սրա համար է որ հայերէ-նում երբեմն թարգմանուած է կոչումն, կս-չարան։ Քրիստոնէութեան տարածման հետ՝ փոխառութեամբ անցել է բազմաթիւ լեզու-ների. այսպէս՝ լտ. ecclesia, ֆրանս. eglise, գոթ. aikklēsǰō, իտալ. chiesa, վրաց. ვკლa-სοა եկլեսիա, թրք. պրս. Բ. 285) ևն։-Բացա-ռութիւն են կազմում գերմանական և սլաւա-կան լեզուները, որոնք փոխ են առել յն. ϰυριαϰόν «տէրունի» բառը։ Այս բառի ժողո-վըրդական ձևը ϰυριϰόν գործածական էր Դ դարում, յունաց մօտ, «եկեղեցի» նշանակու-թեամբ, բայց շուտով ջնջուեց։ Արիոսական սոթացոց ձեռքով այդ բառը փոխ առնուելով Դ դարում, դարձաւ գոթ. *kyrikō և Ե դարից սկսեալ թափանցեց ամբողջ Գերմանիա։ Դրանից յառաջացան հին ստ. գերմ. kirika, անգլսք. cirice, հբգ. chirihha, գերմ.
