Gerste «գարի», անգլսք. gratan, անգլ. groats «կորկոտ» (պհլ. ǰurtak «արմը-տիք» և պրս. [arabic word] zurd «մի տեսակ ոլոռ»), որոնք կարող են մէկ արմատից ծագած լի-նել։ Սրանցից յոյնը ծագում է հնխ. ghčrz-dā ձևից, գերմանականը՝ հնխ. gherzdā ձևից, լատինը՝ հնխ. ghrzd-ձևից (անգլե-րէնը՝ ghroidhn-). սրանց դէմ սպասելի էր հյ. *գարստի և հարց է, թէ կարո՞ղ էր այս ձևից էլ յառաջանալ զարի, ինչպես որ յունարէնի մէջ ϰρւϑή >*ϰριϑ ձևից յառաջա-ցել է ϰρί. Լեզու. 1887. 119 հա-նում է նոյնպէս հնխ. ghardha ձևից, ուր «ր-ի քով dh ինկած է»։ ՀԲուս. § 430 յն. ϰρει։ Հիւնք. գերի բառիզ։-Bugge, KZ, 32, 5 ենթադրում է ghrid նախաձևը, որից վերջաձայնի անկումով յառաջանում է հյ. գարի, բայց կաս-կածում է նաև, որ մի գուցէ բառս կովկասեան լեզուներից փոխառեալ լի-նի։ (Կովկասեան լեզուների մէջ ունինք վրաց. մինկ. լազ. սվան. թերի, ինգ. քեր, ափխազ. ակեր, բոլ որն էլ «գարի» նշանակութեամբ և ձևով այնքան մօ-տիկ հայերէնին)։ Scheftelovitz, BВ, 29, 50 յոն. οῦλαί, ատտ. όλαί «գարիի ա-ղանձ» բառին ցեղակից։ Patrubány, SA, 2, 13. և ՀԱ, 1908, 187 սանս.
• vār «ջուր» բառի հետ՝ իբր «գարեջուր շինելու յատուկ բոյս»։ Մառ, Ocнов. таблиць, էջ 4, կցում է վերի կովկաս-եան ձևերին և արաբ. [arabic word] ša'īr և եբր. [hebrew word] sə'ōra «գարի» բառերին, սեմական արմատը դնում է škr, իսկ յաբեթական արմատը՝ akr, որից առա-ջանում են վրացական ու հայկական ձևերը։ Նոյն հեղինակը ՀԱ, 1921, 81 աւելացնում է և բասկ. gari «ցորեն»։ Dštir, Btrg. Alarod. 55, 110 բասկ, gari, ափխազ. aker, վրաց. քերի «գա-րի», ալբան. kaδ-«աչքի գարիկ» ևն։ Pictet, բ. տպ. Ա. 341 երկար խօսում է յն. ϰρὶ, կելտ. ceri համեմատութեան վրայ, իսկ Բ. էջ 410 զարօղի միազ-նում է ևեւտ. ceria, գալլ. cerevisia, յն. οϊνοσ ϰρίϑινος, «գարեջուր» բառե-րին։

• ՓՈԽ.-Հայերէնից փոխառեալ է երևում արաբ. [arabic word] ja'ra «մի տեսակ գարի, որի հատիկները խոշոր և շատ սպիտակ են լի-նում» (Կամուս, թրք. թրգմ. Ա. 799)։ Աւս բառը կարելի չէ որևէ արաբ արմատով մեկ-նել, կայ արաբ. ǰer արմատը, բայց սրա նշանակութիւնները (աղբ, կղկղանք, յետոյք ևն) բոլորովին անյարմար են նախորդին։
